Tanzania Bus Owners Association (TABOA) has verified
500 agents and clerks at Ubungo Bus Terminal to be issued with
electronic identity cards next week.
Taboa Secretary General Enea Mrutu told The Guardian yesterday through a telephone interview that they are expecting to issue the cards to at least 600 clerks and agents but so far those who have been approved to get the cards were 500.
Mrutu said after the issuance which will be conducted this weekend at Ubungo Bus Terminal (UBT), they will not be responsible with the remaining 100 clerks and agents.
“Taboa had already informed all bus owners to bring the names of their clerks and agents but until now we have received only 500 names; so we will not be responsible for anyone who has not fulfilled requirements especially when the operation to deal with people without IDs starts,” he asserted.
Mrutu said that after the issuance, the bus owners who did not submit the names will have to become the clerks and agents of their own buses and if they disobey their licenses will be blocked.
He asked all bus owners to attend the issuance ceremony so that they know the rules to follow in order to avoid being cornered some where in the middle of action.
According to him some of the advantages of IDs include: ending the problem of touts and disturbances to travelers, thefts and coning, as there are currently many forged tickets by fake clerks and agents.
Others include controlling the randomly fare increase and reduce accidents to some extent.
The plan to issue IDs to the clerks and agents for up country transport by Taboa follows the on going exercise to remove the touts in UBT who are said to disturb the travelers by stealing and coning them.
The existing method of arresting and fining them has failed several times as touts are flooding in UBT day after day and cause discomfort to the travellers.
These touts are said to forge the IDs and uniforms but since Taboa’ IDs are electronic; it will be easier to identify them even if they make fake IDs and hence the problem of touts could be solved.
