By Jimmy Lwangili,
POLICE in Dar es Salaam special zone
yesterday prohibited demonstration organised jointly by opposition
parties ahead of rally at Jangwani grounds tomorrow.
The agenda of the demonstration and the planned rally was to
sensitize the public to take part in the ongoing process of rewriting
the country's new constitition.
Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Mr Suleiman Kova, told a
news conference yesterday that on Wednesday he got the letter of
application for the demonstration from the secretaries of NCCR Mageuzi,
CHADEMA and CUF which had no reference number.
"We discussed with representatives of the opposition parties who
included Mr John Heche and Mr Singo Benson from CHADEMA and Mr Julius
Mtatiro and Mr Hamidu Bobali from CUF. "We agreed that the parties
should hold a public rally, but not demonstrations," Mr Kova said. He
said the Police Force was against the demonstration for security reasons
and avoiding traffic jams.
Mr Kova said a public rally to be held tomorrow was enough to serve
the purpose of informing the people on the importance of taking part in
the constitutional review process.
"If they will not be satisfied with the decision of the police they
are allowed to petition the minister for home affairs," Mr Kova said.
The demonstration was planned to start on Saturday afternoon from Tazara
through Mandela Road, Uhuru Street and Morogoro Road.
